Congratulations to PFC's Y8 fencers, Marissa Nelson, Nick Fornarotto and Tristen Southern for their great result at the Utah Youth Cup event #2. They took 5th, 6th and 7th place, respectively! Their next event will be the Regional Youth Circuit competition in early March. I suspect that they'll do even better then!

January 27, 2008
The first Utah Youth and High School foil league event was this past Saturday. PFC sent 7 fencers who all did well. In the Y8 (17 fencers!), Andie Marks and Tristen Southern both place in the medals with a 5th and 6th place finishes respectively. In Y10 (22 fencers!), Tristen once again did quite well by taking a 10th place. Andie and Caitlyn Callaghan had rougher times but fenced very well. For the Y12, Sean Callaghan took 2nd place. Mitch Deagele, in his premier as a foil fencer, placed 6th and Kolby Deagle took 10th. The Y12 event was a very competitive age group. Sean again did well in the Y14 by placing 12th. Finally, in the Women's U-20, Jordan Tracey placed 5th. For Jordan, Sean and Tristen, this was a particularly great day of fencing in that each of them showed expectional improvements in their games.

The team foil event is next. We are hoping to be able to send Y8, Y10, Y12 and Junior teams to represent our club.

December 3, 2007
The final USI Epee League event was Sat. Most of the PFC epee team attended and we did very well. In Y12, Mitch Deagle took 3rd. Kolby Deagle (in his first ever epee competition) took 5th, Sean Callaghan-6th, Tanner Ketterman-9th and Madison Mansfield-11th. Madison was the top girl in the competition. In Y14, Sean took 5th, Tanner- 9th and Mitch-12th. For the U20, Phillip Leavitt won the event by beating Andrew Howell in the finals. Eric Molton took 5th and earned his E. Eric, Matt, Daylen and Henry also competed. All around awards were given for the season as well. As soon as I get those complete results, I will post them. Congratulations to our epee team for doing so well. OH!! I forgot to post the result earlier of the J.O. Qualifiers. This year, only Matt Miller and Daylen Chapple competed with Matt qualifying. Daylen just barely missed the cut. Congratulations to Matt. Good luck at Nationals!

November 3, 2007
Poctello fencers did extremely well today in the 3rd USI epee competition. In Y12, Mitch Deagle took a 3rd place in the boys' event while Madison Mansfield took the gold in the girls' event. For Y14, Sean Callaghan took 3rd place. Andrew Oak, Mitch and Tanner Ketterman to 5th-7th. PFC fencers were exceptionally well represented in the Junior and Senior events. In the seniors, Phillip Leavitt took 2nd while Isaac Leavitt and Andrew Howell took the 3rds. For the Junior event, it was the same cast of characters but in a different order as Andrew won the event with Isaac taking 2nd and Phillip taking a 3rd. Congratulations to everyone and thank you for supporting our tournament.

October 21, 2007
The first of two Regional Youth Circuit events was Saturday in Orem. Sean and Caitlyn Callaghan, Nathan and Elizabeth Anderson, Kolby and Mitch Deagle, Andrew Oak, Andie Marks and Tristen Southern all competed. This was probably one of our best all around showings with EVERYONE winning some bouts and EVERYONE showing huge amounts of improvement. Sean medaled in the Y12 foil and epee. Andrew and Mitch also both medaled in that event. Kolby missed out on a medal by ONE touch in the Y12 foil. Andie Marks medaled in the Y10 foil. Jordan Tracey and Eric Molten also traveled to Orem to compete in the Open Saber and Jordan also competed in the Div 3 foil. Although neither of them medaled, they both competed well. Jordan missed a medal by just a few touches in a tough bout. Thanks to all of you that competed. Next event is the USI Epee #3 in Pocatello on November 3.

October 13, 2007
Round 2 of the USI Epee league was today in Pocatello and PFC was well represented. In the Y12 event, Madison Mansfield took 1st in the girls' division. On the boys' side, Andrew Oak and Garrett Davenport each took 3rd while Sean Callaghan took 2nd. For Y14, Mitch Deagle and David Comstock each took 3rds. In Juniors, Matt Miller and Phillip Leavitt each took 3rds. Although no PFC fencers medaled in the Senior event, it was encouraging to see that because of the quality of epee fencing in our division, the event was a B2 tournament! Thank you to everyone who competed. Don't forget to sign up NOW for the USI event #3 that will, again, be held in Pocatello.

September 15, 2007
The first USI epee circuit was this Saturday in SLC. Only a few PFC fencers were able to compete but they represented us well. In his first ever competition, Andrew Oaks took 2nd in the Y12! Mitch Deagle took 5th and Tanner Ketterman took 7th. And in his comeback competition, David Comstock took 2nd in the Y14 event while Tanner took 5th and Andrew took 8th. Andrew Howell went on to take 2nd in the Junior event. The competitive season is going to be getting fast and furious in the next few weeks and I'm hoping that PFC fencers will make an effort to get out there and fence. We need to support these events if possible because this level of competition can't help but make us better fencers.

August 14, 2007
Wow. Time really flew by and we are now gearing up for a new fencing season. To wrap up this past season, Sean Callaghan traveled to Miami for the Summer Nationals. He came out of the pools, 3-3 then won his first D.E. but was eliminated in the next round. Still, that was a great showing for Sean now that he's in the Y-12 group. I suspect that next year will be much better for him. Congratulations, Sean.

Practice will begin on September 5th at the usual times. The first epee competition is on September 15th.

May 7, 2007
The Northwest Section qualifiers and Regional Youth circuit events were held this past weekend in Park City. Several PFC fencers attended and did quite well. The highlight was Phillip Leavitt's gold medal bout in the Senior Epee. Phillip came within 1 touch of winning the event and earning PFC's first B ranking. He ended up with 2nd in the Senior and 3rd in the Junior epee. Congratulations, Phillip. Great job. Additionally, the following fencers competed: Jessica Kula, 2nd in Senior women's saber, 2nd in senior women's epee, 3rd in Junior women's epee and 5th in Junior women's saber. Sean Callaghan took 3rd in Y12 foil, Wynnm Murphy took 3rd in Y10 foil and in Y12 epee, Garrett Davenport took 5th, Tanner Ketterman took 8th and Mitch Deagle took 9th. Congratulations to everyone!      Congratulations to Isaac Leavitt!!!! In the final Utah High School league U20 foil, Isaac pulled out a 7th place finish to earn his "C" rating! The tournament had 41 competitors and was ranked A2. Way to go, Isaac! That gives all 3 of the competing Leavitt's their "C" rankings. Who's going to be first to move up to a "B"???

April 15, 2007
The final competition for the Y8's was this past Saturday and the PFC fencers did great. Marissa Nelson continued her climb up the standings by placing 5th this time! Elizabeth Anderson also continued her climb up by placing 8th for the first time! Equally impressive was Tristan Southern's performance by coming out of his pool 3-2 (for his first 3 wins ever!) and placing 10th. Caitlyn Callaghan had one of those days but still did very well. All in all, our Y8's have improved amazingly in the past few months and will be even more impressive next year. Thanks to all of you for working so hard and making the effort to go to these competitions.

March 26, 2007
This weekend was the 3rd Utah High School Cup, an "E and Under" foil event and an Open Epee. Isaac Leavitt and Jordan Tracey were PFC's only entrants in the foil. Both did well but just barely missed out on medaling. In the epee, the Leavitt clan dominated with Isaak taking 5th, Philip taking 3rd and the old man with the bad back, Phil, WINNING the whole thing!!! Phil should be the example that all of the rest of club follows....he refuses to lose regardless of what he is up against. Congrats, Phil!

March 16, 2007
PFC's younger fencers traveled to American Fork on the 10th to compete in the 3rd Utah Youth Cup event. Caitlyn Callaghan took 3rd in the Y8 event for her first top 3 finish (and PFC's highest ever Y8 spot)! Marissa Nelson placed in the top 8 (8th) for her first time as well! And Tristan Southern, although he didn't win any bouts, scored hits on EVERY fencer that he faced! So, all in all, I was thrilled by their performances. In the Y12, Sean Callaghan continued improving his placing by taking 5th place. His losing D.E. was a wonderful bout with Asher Chapman that demonstrated how close Sean is coming to breaking into the top 4.

February 27, 2007
The second Utah Foil League competition was this past weekend. Once again, 10 PFC fencers competed. Caitlyn Callaghan was the top PFC fencer in the Y8's with an 8th place finish. Marissa Nelson, Andie Marks, Elizabeth Anderson also competed and each improved from last month. Tristan Southern did very well for his first ever competition. In the Y10's, Caitlyn moved up in age group to compete and Wynnm Murphy had another good showing. Sean Callaghan placed 5th in the Y12's. Wynnm also competed along with first-timers Nathan Anderson and Kolby Deagle. Sean also moved up to the Y14's for the first time to get even more experience. The best result of the day was put in by Isaac Leavitt who moved up 10 places from last month with an 11th place finish in the mixed U20.

January 21, 2007
This weekend was the first of 4 Utah Youth/High School foil league events. PFC sent 10 fencers! Caitlyn Callaghan, Andie Marks, Marissa Nelson and Elizabeth Anderson all competed in the Y8 event. Congratulations to all of them for getting in there and competing. A special congrats to Caitlyn for placing 6th! Wynnm Murphy competed in the Y10 and broke through with a 6th place finish there. She and Sean Callaghan both competed in the Y12 where Sean placed 6th! In the Women's U20 event, Jordan Tracy made her debute as a foil fencer. She will soon be a force to be reckoned with. In the mixed U20, Isaac Leavitt, Aaron Anderson and Derik Haggard all competed in a massive event.....48 fencers!!! Isaac was our top finisher with a 21st placing. I really appreciate everyone taking the time to compete in this event. There will be 3 more coming up prior to the Divisional and Sectional qualifiers and the RYC. Each event will help us get better and better. Congratulations to everyone!

December 4, 2006
The final USI Epee Circuit event went well this weekend for the PFC fencers who could attend. In the Y10's, Madison Mansfield won the event with her brother, Hunter, taking 3rd. For Y12, Madison took one of the 3rd's along with teammate Tanner Ketterman. I might add that this was Tanner's very first competition! In the Junior event, Matt Miller took a 3rd place and Philip Leavitt took 2nd. Finally, in the Senior competition, Philip took 3rd and Andrew Howell took 2nd. For the overall standings, PFC fencers did very well. Garrett Davenport ended up 3rd in the Y12's. For the overall senior standings, Matt Miller took 4th, Phil Leavitt took 3rd, Andrew Howell took 2nd and Philip Leavitt took 1st!!!!!! Not too shabby! I will add the final standings for the Juniors as soon as I get them. Thank you to all of the epee fencers who supported this league and congratulations to those of you fenced so well.

December 4, 2006
Junior Olympic qualifiers were this past weekend. Philip Leavitt, Isaac Leavitt, Matt Miller, Daylen Chapple, Andrew Howell, Eric Molten, Jordan Tracy, Jessica Kula and Holly Miller all represented PFC. Robert Kittleson and Sean Callaghan also went down to compete in the Open and Y12 foil. Isaac was the standout for this competition when he won the cadet men's epee. He also fenced very well in the cadet foil. Andrew took 3rd in the junior epee while Philip took 4th. Jessica, Jordan and Holly all qualified for nationals but didn't get much fencing because of the small turnout for women's saber. So congratulations to Isaac, Andrew, Jessica, Jordan and Holly for qualifying for nationals. And thanks to everyone who made the time to go down and compete.

November 19, 2006
The PFC epee team had another great day at the 3rd installment of the USI Epee Circuit held in Pocatello. In Y12, Garrett Davenport took 2nd and Mitch took one of the 3rds while our foil fencer Sean Callaghan took the other 3rd! In Junior, Philip Leavitt took 2nd while Isaac Leavitt one of the 3rds.      Congratulations go out to our PFC fencers who competed in Atlanta this year at the Summer Nationals. Sean Callaghan placed 26th in the Y10 foil for the highest placing of any PFC fencer in a national age group event. And as if that wasn't great enough, Philip Leavitt placed 12th in the Div 2 men's epee for the highest placing of any PFC fencer in a Div 2 or Div 3 national event!! Then to top it all off, Phil Leavitt placed 14th in the Vet 50 men's epee. This put 3 of our fencers in the top 32 or better which is an outstanding result for our club. Thanks again to those three and to Isaac Leavitt and Andrew Howell for making the effort to compete on a national level and doing so well.

See everyone in September when we start it all up again.

June 23, 2006
The 2005-06 season is now over for everyone except Sean Callaghan, Andrew Howell and Phil,Philip and Isaac Leavitt. These five will be competing in Atlanta for Summer Nationals.

Goodbye to Sergey, Bruce and Garritt who have returned to their home countries. I hope you guys keep with the fencing and I hope we see you again sometime in our Salle. Good luck to Jason Housely as well. I fully expect to see you back in fencing in 2 years.

Finally, my special thanks and good wishes to Lara Wabrek. Lara was one of my first students and has sure made me look good. She's dominated women's foil fencing in our area and made the men's field notice and respect her. Lara's heading to college where she'll continue her fencing. Thank you for all of your hard work and committment to the sport, Lara. Have fun and come visit us during your breaks.

Sergey Vtrogonov took 2nd, Philip Leavitt- 3rd, Andrew Howell-3rd, Biser Fan- 7th and Isaac Leavitt was 8th. Gerrit Krause and Tzou yun (Bruce) Lee also competed.      Summer national qualifiers were this weekend and PFC had a great showing. Starting with the women: Lara Wabrek won the Div 2 foil AND the Div 2 epee (earning her E in epee). Sarah Greenhalgh won the Y14 epee, took 2nd in the U16 and 4th in the Div 2. Holly Miller was the lone entry in Y14 saber, took 2nd in U16 and a 3rd in Div 2. All 3 of the women qualified for Nationals in multiple events. On the men's side, Eric Molten took 3rd in the U16 saber (and qualified) and 11th in the Div 2. In foil, Isaak Leavitt took 13th, Biser Fan took 18th and Eric Molten took 19th in Div 2. In the Y16, Isaak qualified by taking 5th and Eric took 11th.

But the story of the day was the PFC epee team. Dominating is probably the best word to describe their effort. When the round of 8 came around, 5 of the fencers were PFC. In the round of 4......ALL of the fencers were PFC!!! Andrew Howell won the event and earned his D rating. Philip Leavitt took 2nd and Biser Fan and Jason Housely shared 3rd. Matt Miller took 8th, Isaac took 11th, Phil Leavitt took 12th and Daylen Chapple was 21st. Special thanks to Daylen for competing while VERY sick so that 6 fencers could qualify for nationals. There were some absolutely amazing bouts during this competition and I really appreciate how well the epee team performed. I'll post the rest of the qualifiers as soon as we know.

Congratulations to EVERYONE who went and competed! Thanks for representing our club so well with both your fencing and your sportsmenship.

Time to catch up on some news. Lara Wabrek won the overall title in the Utah High School League Women's U20! Way to go, Lara! Then today, Sean Callaghan won the Regional Youth Circuit Y10 foil and fenced well in the Y12! Wynnm Murphy fenced her second competition by competing in Y12 and Y10 and did well in both. In epee, Madison Mansfield took a 3rd in the Y12 epee. She and Garrett Davenport had to fence each other to get to the medal round. Both of them fenced in the Y10 epee as well (although WHY they competed better in the 12's than the 10's, I'll never know!). David Comstock got back to fencing by competing in the Y12's as well. The PFC's future is looking great with this group of young fencers coming up. Look out next year!

April 10, 2006
Sean Callaghan finished the Utah Youth League strong on Saturday by taking 2nd in the Y10 foil and ranking 2nd over all for the season! Way to go, Sean! Caitlyn Callaghan had another milestone by winning her first ever D.E. bout. Congratulations to Caitlyn as well. Wynnm Murphy fenced her second competition and did very well by winning her first D.E. and narrowly losing her second D.E.

March 26, 2006
PFC fencers finally got to fence some new folks this weekend when we traveled to Boise for the Open Foil and Epee events. Lara Wabrek did her usual magic and won the foil. In epee, the turnout was pretty disappointing with only 7 competitors.......and 5 of them were PFC fencers! We took 1st -5th. :) Matt Miller won the event. Biser Fan took 2nd and Blake Durfee and Andrew Howell placed 3rd. Daylen Chapple took 5th. Congrats to everyone and thanks for making the trip. I know that Salle Boise appreciated that we supported their event.

March 13, 2006
Philip Leavitt earned PFC's FIRST national medal this past weekend when he took 7th in the Reno North America Cup Div. 2 epee event!!! Thanks, Philip. Also, Isaac Leavitt made the top 64 in the Div. 3 and Div. 2 foil, Andrew Howell made the top 32 in the Div. 3 epee. Sarah Greenhalgh, in her first national event, came out of her pool with a 3-2 record and went on to fence well in her first D.E. Phil Leavitt went to his 2nd D.E. in both the Div. 2 and Vet epee events. Congratulations to everyone who made it to Reno. Meanwhile, back in Utah, Sean Callaghan won the Y10 foil and placed 6th in the Y12. Caitlyn Callaghan won her first ever foil bout in the Y8!! Congratulations to both of you for a great job.

February 25, 2006
Lara Wabrek continued her roll this Sat. by winning the Utah Youth Cup #2 Women's U20 and taking 8th in the Mixed U20. Sean Callaghan took 3rd in the Y10. Isaac Leavitt, Aaron Anderson, Eric Moulton, Tucker Leavitt, Cody Durfee, and Caitlyn Callaghan also competed well in their respective events. Congrats to everyone for making the time to compete and representing our club so well.

February 19, 2006
This was a big weekend for PFC fencers. In Conneticut at the Junior Olympic nationals, Lara Wabrek made it to the round of 32 in the Junior event. This is a great placing given that the J.O.'s are based on age not ability level. Lara had to beat an A ranked fencer in her pool bouts to make it to the D.E.'s. There, she won her first three to get her to the 32 (losing to the eventual silver medalist). Congratulations Lara! That's been our best showing at J.O.'s! Meanwhile, back in Utah at the Bleeding Hearts foil and epee Opens, Isaac Leavitt competed in the foil and just barely missed renewing his D ranking. The epee team showed extremely well by taking 8 of the top 15 places in the event. Philip Leavitt took 2nd but did extremely well against A ranked Chris Herrod in the final bout. Phil Leavitt and Jason Housely took the 3rds (with Jason renewing his D ranking). Bisar Fan (6th), Matt Miller (8th), honorary epeeist Isaac Leavitt (11th), Andrew Howell (12th) and Daylen Chapple (15th) rounded out the top 15. Sarah Greenhaulgh placed 20th out of the field of 30 in first ever Open competition (she was also the youngest competitor in the field). Congratulations to all of you!

February 14, 2006
Contrary to popular opinion, it turns out that Lara Wabrek DOES focus before big bouts. Check out the article about the competition where Lara got her C ranking. http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,635179318,00.html

February 12, 2006
Several PFC fencers traveled to Orem this weekend to compete in the Open Foil and Open Epee competitions. Isaac Leavitt competed in the A2 foil competition with 47 other fencers (including 4 A's). This was a very high end competition that was great experience. Phil Leavitt, Philip Leavitt, Matt Miller, Blake Durfee and Daylen Chappel all competed in the epee. Philip placed 5th, Matt 6th (and renewed his E ranking), Phil was 7th, Blake 14th and Daylen 15 out of the 22 competitors. Congratulations to all of them for making the trip and doing so well.

January 22, 2006
PFC has a new "C" ranked fencer! Congratulations to Lara Wabrek for taking a 3rd in yesterday's Mixed Junior foil (a B2 tournament with 44 competitors) and earning her C ranking. After easily avenging her loss at the J.O. Qualifiers (against a B rated fencer), Lara went on to win one more amazing D.E. to get to the top 4. Additionally, Sean Callaghan, Tucker Leavitt and Cody Durfee did well in the Y12 foil (Sean also competed in Y10 foil). Isaac Leavitt and Eric Molton competed in the Junior Mixed foil and then ended up meeting each other in their first D.E. Caitlyn Callaghan competed in her first competition in the Y8 foil and easily met her goal of scoring some touches! Li and Wynnm Murphy also competed for the first time (Junior Womens foil and Y10 foil). Each came out of their pools with 3-1 records! All in all, it was a great two days of fencing and I hope everyone had fun......ok......break's over. Now it's time to get ready for the February event.

December 20, 2005
I have a little catching up to do here for results! Tucker, Phil and Isaac Leavitt traveled to SLC for the "Jingle Blades" foil competition. Tucker won the Youth Novice event! Phil and Isaac both took 3rds in the D and Under event. Congrats to all three! Then the Leavitts returned to Orem for the Mega E and Under competition. Sean Callaghan also competed. They had a great showing with Phil placing 5th, Tucker 9th and Sean 11th. Way to go, guys. As 2005 winds up, this would seem to be a good time to recap how our PFC fencers have ranked:
Phil Leavitt          C epee
Philip Leavitt       C epee
Lara Wabrek       D foil
Isaac Leavitt        D foil
Aaron Spencer     D foil
Robert Kittleson   E foil
Jason Housely      D epee
Laura Wolfly        D saber
Matt Miller           E epee
Rebecca Kittleson  E epee

And I guess we should include Johnathon Griggs with a C in foil and epee. Great job to everyone for their success.

I expect a few more ranking this spring and a couple of ranking increases as well!

Merry Christmas to everyone!!!

November 20, 2005
PFC had a great showing at the Junior Olympic qualifiers in Bountiful, UT this past weekend. Seventeen members of our club made the trip. Sarah Greenhaugh won the award for most improved female PFC fencer by taking 2nd in the Junior women's epee and WINNING the Cadet women's epee in her first ever competition! In men's epee, Jason Housely took 3rd in the Junior event and Matt Miller took 2nd in the Cadet. All 3 of those epee fencers qualified for the J.O.'s. In the Open epee, Philip Leavitt took a 3rd and Matt earned his "E" ranking. Phil Leavitt, Bisar Fan, Blake Durfee, Daylen Chapple and Andrew Howell also competed well in epee. Moving on to foil and saber...... Lara Wabrek won the women's Junior foil and then went on to a great showing in the Open. If not for a VERY unfortunate error by the referee, Lara would have made the semi-finals. Derik Haggard won the most improved male PFC fencer by placing 8th in both the Junior and Cadet events in his first ever competition. Additionally, Isaak Leavitt, Aaron Spencer and Aaron Anderson did amazing jobs in the cadet, junior and Open events. Tucker Leavitt took 3rd in the Y12 foil while Sean Callaghan took 8th. Sean then went on to win the Y10 foil. In saber, Laura Wolfley won the women's Junior saber and Holly Miller competed for her very first time in the same event. In men's saber, Aaron Spencer and Bisar Fan competed in the Junior event. I might also add here that the universe, as we know it, did a flip-flop as Isaac fenced cadet epee and Blake fenced Junior and Open foil. Neither weapon may ever be the same......... :) Thanks to everyone for taking the time to compete and handle themselves in such a positive manner. I really appreciate that everyone made an effort to support each other during the various competitions.

November 5, 2005
And the younger fencers continue with what is becoming a winning tradition for PFC! Today David Comstock took 3rd place in the Y12 epee of the Regional Youth Circuit event in Orem. Right after that, Sean Callaghan won the gold medal in the Y10 foil! Two PFC fencers, two medals! Yea....that sounds like a good deal to me! Congratulations to both of you. Thanks for working hard.

November 4, 2005
Congratulations to former PFC member Johnathon Griggs! Last weekend, he earned his "C" foil ranking by winning a "D" and Under competition in Florida. Even though he gave it a valiant effort to throw the final bout away by getting hit with THREE seconds left to tie the bout at 14-14, Johnathon still came through and won. :) Great job, Johnathon!

October 18, 2005
And the beat goes on.......The Leavitts made a clean sweep down in Orem over the weekend. Isaac is definitely on a roll as he won the E and under foil on Friday evening to earn his D rating. Yes....if you read the previous news update, you'll know that Isaac earned his E rating just LAST weekend! Congrats, Isaac. Meanwhile on Saturday, the usual gold medal round of Leavitt (Phil) vs. Leavitt (Philip) occurred again (deja vu). Philip the younger won. Congrats to both of them for such a dominating performance. Lara Wabrek made the top eight in the Open foil losing her D.E. bout to Bethany 12-15. Awesome fencing, Lara! Thanks to everyone that competed.

October 9, 2005
And the great results just keep on coming! Yesterday, Isaak Leavitt won the Unranked foil competition in Ogden to earn his "E" ranking! Congratulations Isaak!!!

October 4, 2005
Congratulations to Aaron Spencer! Aaron won one of the E and Under foil competitions in Orem on Saturday to get his D ranking! Way to go, Aaron!!

September 27, 2005
PFC is off to another great start with Philip and Phil Leavitt taking 1st and 2nd in the Open Epee in Orem this past weekend. Philip won the event....this time. Congratulations to both of you!!

September 19, 2005
Welcome back to another season with PFC!
Our first practice is scheduled for September 20th. ( I know....not much notice) We have found a temporary home for our second night of practice at Grace Luthern school for Monday nights. (I'm working on getting the map up on our web site. In the meantime, I THINK that I have the link to the map working.) We have some changes coming up this season and I hope that everyone is excited about getting back to fencing as I am!

July 16, 2005 Final entry for the season
Congratulations to all of our fencers who competed in the Summer nationals in Sacramento this year. I appreciate that everyone took the time and effort to make the trip and fence hard. Sean Callaghan, Isaac Leavitt, Matt Miller, Philip Leavitt, Phil Leavitt, Rebecca Kittleson, Lara Wabrek, Barb Steele, and Laura Wolfley all made the trip. My special congratulations and thanks to Lara and Philip. I think that they'd agree with me when I say that they didn't fence their best on their first day of fencing. However, they both came back during their next competition and placed in the top 32 in their respective events. Philip placed 29th in the Div. 2 men's epee before he rolled his ankle. Lara placed 13th in the Div 3 women's foil. My coach, Tony Gillham, had set a goal for me to try to get our fencers into the top 32 during Summer Nationals. He said that would show that our program is progressing. Looks like we're on track! :) So thanks again to everyone. Keep an eye on our web site for dates, times and locations for next seasons practices. Have a great summer!

May 30, 2005
Man, did PFC shine at the Utah/S. Idaho Divisional Qualifiers this year!!!

Phil Leavitt took 1st in the Div. 2 Men's epee. Philip took 2nd. Jason Housely took 8th and Matt Miller took 10. All four of them qualified for Summer Nationals. Additionally, Daylen Chapple took 15th and Jesse Jones-Blair competed well in his first ever big competiton.

Lara Wabrek won the women's Div. 2 foil and qualified.

Laura Wolfley took 3rd in the women's Div. 2 saber and qualified.

Rebecca Kittleson won the women's Div. 2 epee and qualified.

Matt Miller took 2nd in the Y16 men's epee and qualified again! Daylen and Jesse were each one bout away from qualifying as well.

Isaac Leavitt placed 3rd in the Y14 men's foil and qualified.

In all, we will have 10 PFC fencers competing in Sacramento in July. Barb Steele will be competing in Vet. women's foil and Sean Callaghan will compete in Y10 men's foil. Amazing job, everyone!

May 13, 2005
Lara Wabrek ranked 10th in the final standings for the Utah High School league Mixed U20 foil. Way to go, Lara! She was the only woman to place so high. She has definitely earned the respect of ALL foil fencers in Utah.

May 2, 2005
A PFC fencer made us all look good again! Philip Leavitt went to Seattle for the Northwest Sectional Under-19 championships.....and took the silver medal!!! Evidently, lots of people were asking, "There's fencing in Pocatello, Idaho?" They know now...... Thanks Philip. Great job.

April 26, 2005
Lara Wabrek dazzled 'em in Orem this weekend at the Utah High School League championships where she won the Women's Under 20 and placed 5th in mixed the Under 20! That win in the Women's sealed her position as the overall Women's U20 champion. Congratulations Lara! Isaac Leavitt had his best finish of the year in the mixed Y-14 event where he placed 10th (just two spots away from a medal!). Congratulations to Isaac as well! Lara, Isaac, Tucker Leavitt, and Sean Callaghan all received special recognition awards from the league this year for their participation. In addition, Jenna White, Aaron Anderson and Cody Durfee all participated at some point in the league competitons. "Great job!" to all of you!

April 18, 2005
PFC held our annual spring tournament on Saturday. The turn-out was disappointing (those of you that didn't come....beware my wrath at next practice!). But the fencers that did attend performed well and got a great warm-up for the upcoming Regional Youth Circuit and the Divisional Qualifiers. In foil, Aaron Spencer won the event after beating Lara Wabrek 15-14 in a great bout. Derik Haggard and Robert Kittleson tied for 3rd. A special congratulations to Derik since this was his first tournanment ever! Our other new foilist, Foon Hoe Wong, did really well and has a promising future. The "Tough It Out" award goes to Isaac Leavitt for competing despite having a pretty nasty bike crash the day before. Way to hang in there, Isaac!! The epee competition ended up with Phil and Philip Leavitt fencing off for first. This time it was Philip (the younger) who won out. The two 3rd places went to Daylan Chapple and Matt Miller. Special recognition to David Comstock and Sarah Greenhalgh for their great showing during their first ever competitions! So once again, thanks to those that came and supported our event. Now we get ready for the qualifers in May.

February 27, 2005
The second Utah Youth Cup event was held in Bountiful on Sat. PFC was represented by: Lara Wabrek, Isaac Levitt, Aaron Anderson, Jenna White, Sean Callaghan, and Cody Durfee....oh....also Blake Durfee in his grand debut as a foil fencer! Lara won the U20 Women's again....only getting hit twice in the entire pool. She then placed 8th in the Mixed U20! Aaron won his first D.E. and Isaac went 13-15 before losing his first one. Sean and Cody both went 1-1 in their D.E.'s before getting knocked out. But both of them were fencing great. Their times are coming. Jenna had probably the most challanging day in the Mixed Y14's. But she scored on almost everyone and was complimented in her D.E. bout for her excellent parries! Blake announced that foil is ridiculous and he's sticking with epee. Great job everyone. We'll go back next month and do it again!

February 24, 2005

Sorry that I've gotten behind with the club news. Lots has been going on. Phil and Philip Leavitt did their thing again in Orem at the Open Epee. This time, dad beat out son and they ended up 3rd and 4th. Congrats to both! At the Utah Youth Cup #1, Lara Wabrek won the Women's Under-20 and then took 15th in the Mixed Under 20. Aaron Anderson took 17th after going 4-0 in his pools and getting pummeled by a pommel on the arm. Aaron Anderson took 23rd and Isaac Leavitt took 41st. It was a huge competition. In the Mixed U-14, Isaac took 11th. Jenna White competed for her first time and did great. Tucker Leavitt took 12th in the Mixed U-12. And Sean Callaghan took 22nd in the Mixed U-10.      Major congratulations to Phil and Philip Leavitt!!! They BOTH earned their "C" rankings in Orem this weekend by tying for 3rd in the Open epee!!! They are PFC's first C ranked fencers in their own weapon. (Sorry Johnathon....your's was in epee but you're a foil fencer!!) Way to go Phil and Philip, once again you've represented us well. Also, a "way to go" to Lara for once again showing strongly in the Open foil. She made it to her second DE. Each competiton, she's getting stronger and stronger.

November 21, 2004
The excellent fencing by PFC members continued this past weekend in Ogden at the J.O. qualifiers. Friday night was the men's U17 and U20 epee as well as the novice foil and Y10 foil (non-qualifying events). Congratulations to Philip Leavitt and Matt Miller who took 1st and 2nd respectively. Their gold medal bout was the best bout of the night going all the way to 14-14. At the same time they were fencing, Aaron Spencer and Isaac Leavitt were fencing the gold medal bout for the novice foil. Aaron had come back from a 9 point deficit to win and get to the gold medal round. He then took 1st and Isaac took 2nd. For the U20 men's epee, Philip Leavitt won the event while Jason Housely and Mike Hales fenced off for the bronze with Jason winning out. On Saturday, Lara Wabrek took 2nd in the women's U20 foil. She lost out 13-15 to the 3rd ranked junior fencer from Venezuela! Way to go, Lara. Cody Durfee took 2nd in the Y10 foil for his first competition ever!Qualifying for J.O's this year are: Philip Leavitt, Matt Miller, Jason Housely and Lara Wabrek. November 13, 2004
And the congratulations continue! This time to Tucker Leavitt who took 2nd at the Regional Youth Circuit Y10 boys foil event in Orem. Great job, Tucker! Just think how you'd do if you PRACTICED some!?!?!? :).

Rebecca had a very impressive bout with Jody Blau in the D.E's and scored 8 touches off of him. Wonderful job, everyone. You represented us well.

Tucker took a 3rd in the Under 12 foil. If Isaac hadn't gotten sick, I think that they would have gone 4 for 4!! Congratulations again.

September 17, 2004
In order for the club to continue to buy parts for our equipment, we need to start charging to repair personal equipment. So if you need Aaron or Daylen to repair something for you, please pay them $5 plus the cost of the parts. If you want to learn to fix things yourself, ask either of the armourers and they'll be glad to show you how. As always, if you break any of the club equipment, please pay Barb for the cost of repair or replacement.

May 4, 2004
